Pay raise

Powell River Regional District elected officials voted themselves a pay raise at a recent board meeting. Directors adopted an amendment to the remuneration and expenses bylaw that raises annual indemnities by 1.9 per cent, a cost-of-living increase, and the standing committee meeting allowance by $25. Directors will receive $100 for standing committee meetings up to five hours, up from $75.

Annual indemnities are $9,214 for rural directors and $6,592 for City of Powell River directors. The regional board chair receives an additional $6,623 and directors from Texada Island and Lasqueti Island receive an additional premium of $1,528.

Towns for Tomorrow

Directors approved a $400,000 Towns for Tomorrow grant application to construct a new fire hall for the Northside Volunteer Fire Department, based on total eligible project costs of $938,394.

Trails mapping

Directors passed a motion to enter an agreement with Recreation Sites and Trails BC to manage funding for the completion of a trails survey in the Powell River area.

Subdivision

Directors voted to advise the City of Powell River that the regional district’s interests are unaffected by the proposal to develop 16 water-access-only lots adjacent to the Shinglemill Pub and Bistro site on Powell Lake. The motion is subject to the city contacting the Powell Lake Cabin Owners’ Association to ensure that its interests will not be negatively affected by the proposed development.

Toba Inlet

Directors passed a motion to advise the ministry of natural resource operations that the regional district has no objection to issuing a 30-year licence of application to Klahoose Forestry Limited Partnership in Toba Inlet for a fuel storage facility, provided it is constructed, maintained and operated in accordance with all relevant statutes, industry standards and codes of practice.

Float cabin

Directors have no objection to the relocation of an existing float cabin from the west side of Goat Island to a site on the south side of Powell Lake, due north of Haslam Lake.

Map fees

Directors adopted a bylaw that establishes a $50 fee to supply mapping information in its base electronic format, often used by agencies, surveyors, and consultants to prepare custom maps.

Water grants

Directors voted to support two applications for provincial infrastructure planning grants. The first is for $5,000 to assess the Shelter Point Park water system on Texada Island. The second is for $10,000 to offset the projected $18,000 cost for a water quality and system operations study of the Pete's Lake Water Users Society system on Lasqueti Island. The society would be responsible for costs that exceed the grant amount.
