Public to be engaged over solid waste

Powell River Regional District directors have unanimously endorsed a communications plan to outline their solid waste management plan.

At the May 28 regional board meeting, directors approved the communications plan, which has several components.

The first is to link the resource recovery centre concept presentation shown at the recent regional district, City of Powell River and Tla’amin (Sliammon) Nation (C3) meeting onto the regional district’s website.

The board has directed Mike Wall, manager of community services, and the Let’s Talk Trash Team, to hold a public forum on solid waste in the fall. Topics will include: Multi-Material BC update; added Extended Producer Responsibility and local collection materials; organics diversion update; landfill closure planning update and Resource Recovery Centre concept.

Have concerns

Regional directors agreed unanimously with a recommendation from their committee of the whole meeting, May 21, that the board write a letter to the minister of the environment expressing the regional district’s concerns over the gaps experienced in the Printed Paper and Packing (PPP) and Extended Producer Responsibility programs.

Support terminal

Regional directors have agreed to write a letter of support for a proposed commercial-industrial barge facility with staging area and docking amenities in Saltery Bay.

Approve statements

Regional directors concurred unanimously with the recommendation of the committee of the whole to approve, as presented, the regional district financial statements for the year ended December 31, 2014.

On committee

Regional directors voted unanimously to appoint Director Sandy McCormick, Electoral Area D, and City Director Russell Brewer as representatives to the regional transportation working group.
