Regional board offers support

Powell River Regional District has no objection to a five-year Crown land licence for waterpower investigative purposes being issued to Sigma Engineering Ltd. over an 803.5-hectare area located in the vicinity of Racoon Creek in northern Electoral Area A.

During the Thursday, August 27, regional board meeting on Lasqueti Island, directors unanimously passed the recommendation from the planning committee, subject to: The applicant undertaking a detailed analysis to determine the project footprint (including intake structure, penstock pipe, transmission lines, road construction, staging areas for spoil) and its impact on wildlife, fish, forests, recreation, and slope/geotechnical stability; and, the regional district receiving a second referral and opportunity to make further recommendations if this project moves beyond an investigative phase.

Supports construction

There was unanimous agreement at the regional board meeting that directors concur with the recommendation of the planning committee to advise the ministry of forests, lands and natural resource operations that the regional district supports the Section 56 amendment application submitted by Knuckleheads Winter Recreation Association to construct two new trails and a ski shelter in the Knuckleheads Winter Recreation Area.

Hydro installation

The regional board unanimously concurs with the recommendation of its planning committee to advise JWilkins Consulting that the regional district has no objection to the proposed installation and relocation of overhead structures for BC Hydro’s electrical distribution system on Texada Island.

Favours strategy

A letter of support will be provided for Tourism Vancouver Island regarding the organization’s application for grant funding from Island Coastal Economic Trust (ICET) to complete phase two of the Vancouver Island and Sunshine Coast Trails Strategy. The regional board voted unanimously in favour of the recommendation.

Airport upgrades

Texada Airport Advisory Committee’s request for runway cams and a weather station for the Texada/Gillies Bay airport in the 2016 budget, and the issuance of a request for proposals for haying the airport site in 2016, were approved unanimously by the regional board.
