Rock-themed job fair comes to town

Employment showcase makes final stop

Part concert, part job fair, all rock. Powell River is the last stop on the rock-themed JobFest 2012 tour that has been travelling around the province this summer teaching youth career tools and celebrating available career options for youth in BC.

The event is open for everyone, but it is specifically designed to engage and entertain young people from 15 to 29 years old. It is being produced by the provincial ministry of jobs, tourism and skills training.

Kim Miller, manager of Powell River Chamber of Commerce, said she has worked hard with Pam Krompocker of Powell River Community Futures to bring the event to town.

“We consider ourselves lucky that we were put on the list,” said Miller. “It’s gone well in many communities. They’ve done 49 other communities before us so they are going to be well-versed at what they are doing. They bring this whole production into town the day before—tractor trailers full of everything. It’s pretty amazing.”

Headlining the event will be Victoria pop-rock band Acres of Lions. The event will include music from local band Potential Union and speakers from youth and area businesses. Terry Peters, Powell River Fire Rescue deputy fire chief is scheduled to speak at 1 pm and Cory Carr, consultant with Investors Group Financial Services Inc. will speak at 3 pm. Jennifer Salisbury, a motivational speaker, is scheduled for 4:30 pm.

Speakers will share stories and tips for success and inspiration. JobFest staff will be available to show visitors how to use job-finding tools and answer questions. Visitors will also be able to play interactive games and receive prizes throughout the event, which takes place from noon to 6 pm on Friday, October 19, in the parking lot at Vancouver Island University.

More information about JobFest 2012 is available on the event’s website. Visitors to the website will also find helpful links to BC-specific career resource tools.
