VIDEO – Salmon are returning to spawn in Willingdon Creek, then making their way up either McGuffie or McFall creeks.
CUPE (Canadian Union of Public Employees) Local 798 members have volunteered their time over the years to rehabilitate the streams and stock them with chum and coho, donated by the Powell River Salmon Society.
Concern has been raised about pilings that have washed up on the beach. One pile of three lashed together with a wire landed right next to the mouth of Willingdon Creek.
Darin Guenette, BC Ferries’ manager of public affairs, said he spoke to the project team that has been working on upgrading the Westview ferry terminal. “I’ve received confirmation that these pilings were not associated with the terminal work,” he said.
However, Guenette added, Fraser River Pile Driving has volunteered to remove the pilings from the beach to help the community. “All around, this is a positive result for all,” he said.
BC Ferries strives to work closely with any contractors to carry out projects in a responsible manner, Guenette also said. “We are reassured by the professionalism shown by this contractor and will continue to focus on practicing good, safe, reliable practices, so as to minimize impacts of any work we carry out to the community,” he said.
