SUMMER REGULATION: Outdoor fires on Savary Island will be banned from June 1 through until the end of September, with a campfire ban going into effect on July 1.

In accordance with qathet Regional District’s Savary Island outdoor fire control bylaw 549, all outdoor fires, other than campfires, will be prohibited across all areas of Savary Island, beginning on June 1, until the end of September.

According to a media release, the campfire ban will come into effect beginning July 1. The fire chief may extend burning prohibition times and restrict hazardous activities that could cause a fire should the conditions warrant such measures. These prohibitions will remain in effect regardless of weather conditions during this time, the release stated.

The public is reminded that there is a maximum penalty of $2,000 for contraventions of the fire ban. Savary Island Volunteer Fire Department (SIVFD) is authorized to enforce the bylaw. The release stated that RCMP have confirmed periodic patrols will be in effect on the island over the summer months and this may include support from RCMP’s west coast marine services.

“Due to the density of homes and the increase in the island’s population during the summer months, Savary Island would be greatly impacted should a wildfire start and spread on the island,” stated SIVFD fire chief Chris Philpott. “These annual summer fire bans are implemented in order to protect lives and prevent avoidable property damage.”

SIVFD is operated by a small group of dedicated volunteers who give their time to train and respond to fires, emergency medical calls and other public safety concerns on Savary Island.
