Internationals boost revenue
Sino Bright School programs brought Powell River Board of Education more revenue than expected this year, according to secretary-treasurer Stephen Hopkins.
Hopkins estimated about $200,000 of additional revenue was garnered from summer and winter programs from Sino Bright, which saw higher than expected enrolment in 2014/2015.
Student numbers
School enrolment is down slightly this fall, including a decline in the number of secondary students.
The decline is attributed to incoming grade eights and outgoing grade 12s, said education superintendent Jay Yule.
According to numbers filed with the ministry of education, 1,823 students are enrolled in the district, which is 63 fewer than last year.
Agreement renewal
School District 47 and Tla’amin (Sliammon) First Nation council have renewed their local education agreement for another five years.
First signed in 2008, the collaborative agreement between the district and first nation provides educational programs and services for Tla’amin students.
According to data provided by the school board, approximately 15 per cent of students in the district identify as having first nations ancestry.
