Funds raised for cancer research

Almost $5,000 was raised at two Powell River elementary schools for the Terry Fox Foundation. Westview Elementary students raised $3,696 and Henderson Elementary students raised $1,257 from their annual runs in aid of cancer research. At Brooks Secondary School students collected $1,000 for the foundation at their first Jasper Mohan Terry Fox Memorial Run. An additional $300 was contributed to finishing a computer that Jasper had started working on and which is to be donated to Ronald McDonald House in Vancouver.

Scholarships

Brooks principal Kathy Rothwell reported that grade 12 students are starting to attend scholarship meetings. The majority of the almost $100,000 in scholarships given out annually comes from local clubs, businesses, unions, school parent advisory committees and some from individual memorial awards. Rothwell is encouraging all grade 12 students to spend time looking through the awards binder because many of the scholarships are not based on grades, but community involvement.
