School Board Briefs: January 26, 2011

Chair elections Debby Lewis has been re-elected chair of the Powell River Board of Education. No other nominations were put forward during the Tuesday, January 18 board meeting. Lewis has served as chair since 2009.

Debby Lewis has been re-elected chair of the Powell River Board of Education. No other nominations were put forward during the Tuesday, January 18 board meeting. Lewis has served as chair since 2009. Jeanette Scott also accepted her re-election as board vice-chair.

Haywire Bay

School District 47 has been awarded a grant from 2010 School Community Connections for $25,000 to go toward the construction of camp facilities in Haywire Bay. The grant, which falls under the title Supporting Neighbourhood Learning Centres, was applied for in conjunction with the Powell River Regional District and will help the district to build sleeping cabins, an event tent and a central lodge with kitchen and washrooms.

The BC Arts Council and Vancouver Foundation has awarded School District 47 $3,000 in funding to go toward professional arts activities in schools during the 2010-2011 school year. The money will help bring artists and musicians together with elementary students in the district. Some of the programs take place in the schools and others as field trips. “It allows us to bring those people in and give a different opportunity for the students,” said Jay Yule, superintendent of schools.
