James Thomson Elementary School is one of two SD47 schools involved in a mental health literacy research pilot project.

Powell River Board of Education meeting on January 18, School District 47 superintendent of schools Jay Yule outlined a mental health literacy research pilot project at James Thomson and Westview Elementary schools.

“We’re happy to be piloting that program,” said Yule. “A conversation we’ve had around this plan is how difficult it is to sometimes measure mental health and how schools are doing.”

According to a submission in the agenda package, the resource emphasizes the science of mental health, knowledge about mental disorders that appear in children and youth, stigma reduction, promotion of help-seeking behaviours and the development of healthy lifestyles.
