Dr. Shannon Behan, principal at Westview Elementary School, released the following statement to students' parents about Powell River RCMP responding to an incident near the school on February 14.

"This morning there was a situation in one of the apartment buildings across from Westview Elementary, that necessitated RCMP involvement. This incident did not involve any students from Westview. A helicopter was required to land on the field next to our school and all students were safely brought inside while this occurred.

"School administration was also informed that the individual in question was quickly brought into RCMP custody. All students and staff at Westview are safe. Emergency safety protocols were followed at all times, with open and clear communication to qathet SD47's senior administrative team.

"The RCMP team lead is also to be commended in their open and continuous communication throughout. The situation has been resolved and we continue to enjoy the rich learning experiences at Westview Elementary."

qathet resident and business owner Karyne Bailey said she saw an unusual sight while heading to work this morning, at around 10:30 am. Bailey said she pulled over when she saw a helicopter flying low.

“I was on my way to work, when I was driving up Manitoba Avenue the helicopter was coming down over town and I couldn’t believe how low it was,” Bailey told the Peak. “Then I saw it land at Westview Elementary School and I could see the helicopter on the field, and what looked like three guys that went up to the helicopter and only two people came back.”

Bailey said she witnessed what looked like officers in tactical gear.

“It’s not everyday you see something like that here,” added Bailey. “So I really wonder what happened.”

Bailey said she saw four police cruisers at a townhouse across the street from the school.
