Seawalk extension receives more funds

Reduced project scope eliminates two timber sections

Another contribution from Powell River Community Forest Ltd. has increased the budget for extending the seawalk from the new section of the south harbour to the Wharf at Westview.

City of Powell River staff had budgeted $200,000, using funds from the community forest reserve, to complete portions of the extension with timber construction. A request for proposals was issued and two bids were received, both of which were over the $200,000 budget.

Staff reviewed the project and determined that a reduction in timber construction by using more rip-rap and gravel would reduce the cost. Staff then negotiated the price with the lowest bidder, who agreed to a cost adjustment for the reduced sections of work.

The new price was still about $74,000 over budget. The community forest board representatives supported more funds being allocated from the community forest reserve for the project.

Council approved the additional funds at the October 4 meeting and awarded the contract to Agius Builders Ltd. for $205,235 plus HST.
