Small earthquake recorded north of Sechelt

A 2.5-magnitude earthquake was recorded north of Sechelt on Oct. 19.

A small earthquake was recorded 27 kilometres northeast of Sechelt just before 8 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 19.

Natural Resources Canada (NRCAN) reported the earthquake as a 2.6 magnitude with a depth of 1.5 kilometres. It was located between Narrows and Salmon inlets.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey website, the earthquake was five kilometres in depth and had a magnitude of 2.5. Six people reported on the website that they felt the earthquake in locations ranging from the Pender Harbour area to Vancouver, between 30 to 60 kilometres away. 

On volcanodiscovery.com, a resident of Squamish reported feeling a short rumble. The website states earthquakes below a magnitude of three are rarely felt, but earthquakes with a magnitude above two can be felt if the quake’s depth is only a few kilometres.

No damage was reported.
