FIRE LOCATIONS: This screenshot from the BC Wildfire Dashboard shows four sites around Powell Lake, indicated by the orange squares, where fires were reported over the weekend.

There were reports of four small forest fires in the Powell Lake area on August 8 and 9.

According to fire information officer Dorothe Jakobsen from the Coastal Fire Centre, while there have been lightning strikes in the region, the fires are of undetermined cause.

The McMillan Creek fire is out of control, according to Jakobsen. It’s 0.009 hectares in size, with an initial attack crew and a helicopter at the fire site. The fire was reported on August 9.

“They are bucketing there today,” said Jakobsen.

Another fire, designated as Powell Lake, is under control, said Jakobsen. It, too, is 0.009 hectares in size, she added. There are no crews onsite but it is being monitored. The fire was reported on August 8.

A fire designated as Chippewa Bay has one initial attack crew and a helicopter onsite.

“Bucketing yesterday was successful,” said Jakobsen. “They did see some hot spots and they are mopping up. The status is being held.” This fire was reported on August 8.

There was also a report of a fire at Pickle Point on August 8, but Jakobsen said there was nothing found at the site.

People using the backcountry are reminded of the extreme fire hazard in the coastal region. All fires, including campfires, are not permitted.
