City of Powell River councillors were urged to give residents an opportunity to vote on a possible name change.
At the August 16 committee of the whole meeting, Don Edwards said he was before the committee to represent the people of Powell River who would like a voice in the decision of the possible renaming of the city.
“You need to give serious thought on this issue before taking any action to accept the joint working group’s report,” said Edwards. “I want to remind you that the people of Powell River elected you to this council, and in doing so, to represent them in this very serious matter. So far, we have seen no representation from the majority of this council.
“I would also like to remind you that every voice counts, Indigenous and non-Indigenous.”
Edwards said there is talk about reconciliation, and the opposite is division, which is what this council has done, he added.
“All you have done is cause dissension between two communities,” added Edwards, “that have lived side-by-side for years.”
