Teacher puts name forward for council seat
Strong community connection leads to candidacy

Belief that Powell River is a great community should not lead to complacency, said Anita Adams.

Adams is running for a City of Powell River Council seat in the November 2014 civic elections.

“It is essential for citizens to be actively involved in our democratic system,” she said. “This is my reason for adding my name to the ballot box for the 2014 Municipal Election for councillor.”

From a young age, Adams has had a strong interest in the community. “My volunteer experiences varied from Public Library, Powell River Citizen Advocacy, Heritage Society, to Powell River Youth Soccer Association, president of the Townsite Ratepayers Association, and president of the Powell River Navy League.”

Politics interests Adams. She works well with people and is good at team-building, she said. “My masters degree in education is on leadership and team-building. I have taught in Powell River for over 25 years.” And, as many teachers will attest to, “The greatest joy for a teacher is to see their former students being productive citizens and engaged in their communities.

“We live in challenging times. It is important for the mayor and council to advocate to the provincial government to invest in small communities like Powell River.” She sees a need for an affordable transportation system, and to maintain and repair the city’s infrastructure. Employment needs to provide a living wage.

“I strongly believe it is essential to good decision making that council and mayor have the opportunities to listen to the public and investigate every possible solution for the issues at hand.” Final decisions should be based on solid evidence, she added, which will benefit the whole community and are financially sustainable.

“We have a wonderful community that has great programs in arts, sports and community events. The physical beauty of Powell River is breathtaking. My focus is to build on what we have and explore our endless possibilities to make Powell River even better.”
