Australian native takes over Christian school

Students at Powell River Christian School (PRCS) were greeted by a new principal when school started this September.

David Cameron and his family moved to Canada during the summer to take on the principalship of the independent school.

Cameron, who grew up in Northeastern Australia, met his Canadian wife on Thetis Island while attending bible camp. He said he jumped at the opportunity to come to Powell River for the job as he and his wife were looking to live in a smaller community and had always planned on returning to Canada to raise their three children. They arrived in late July. Their eldest daughter is attending PRCS preschool.

“When we drove off the ferry,” said Cameron, “it felt like we were driving home. It was just beautiful.”

When asked about living in Powell River, he said seeing bears wandering through his backyard caught him a little by surprise at first, but it is definitely part of the appeal of living here.

Cameron not only assumes the responsibility for administering the school, he will also be teaching grades eight and nine math and science.

He said he is impressed with the teachers at the school and is hoping to work on building more bridges into the larger community.

He is the third principal in the school’s 20-year history.
