Sustainability committee seeks community participation

Council approves dropping conference

City of Powell River council has approved new terms of reference for the sustainability steering committee.

The amended terms of reference drops the idea of holding a community sustainability conference in Powell River by June 30, 2014.

Council appointed a select committee in June 2013, for the purpose of making recommendations to promote and facilitate social, cultural, economic and environmental sustainability in Powell River.

The committee is mandated to guide and facilitate the production of an integrated community sustainability plan (ICSP) for the city by October 2014.

The ICSP will provide an opportunity to identify and prioritize community-wide actions to increase sustainability and to bridge the Sustainability Charter for the Powell River Region with current initiatives and future actions.

As well as the sustainability charter, the city also has a Carbon Neutral Action Plan and a Community Energy and Emissions Plan. The committee will consider these plans, along with existing council policies such as the 2013-2014 strategic priorities and the five-year financial plan.

Council has appointed councillors Myrna Leishman, Russell Brewer and Debbie Dee to the committee, with Leishman as chair. The city is inviting one member from each of the following organizations to sit on the committee: Powell River Regional District, Tla’amin (Sliammon) First Nation, School District 47, Vancouver Island University, Powell River Chamber of Commerce, Powell River Regional Economic Development Society and Powell River Community Futures. As well, three members of the public will be appointed to the committee.

In developing the ICSP, the committee will organize existing actions, determine gaps and identify priorities, create some task forces to provide more attention in specific areas and support partner organizations.
