qathet region’s community notification system (CNS) will be tested on November 30 at 1:30 pm.
According to a media release from City of Powell River, the CNS was implemented in 2021 specifically for qathet as a highly flexible means to reach people with official information during an emergency.
Immediate alerts on localized emergencies, such as severe weather events, floods, earthquakes, hazardous materials, wildfires and infrastructure collapse are broadcast via text message, email and phone, the release stated. The CNS reaches Savary Island, Lund, Tla’amin Nation, City of Powell River, south of town, Texada and Lasqueti islands.
Unlike the federal and provincially operated alert ready system, which does not require registration, residents must sign-up for the CNS to receive notifications if an emergency were to happen here, the release stated.
Important information from trustworthy official sources is critical to an emergency plan, according to the release.
qathet region residents can register for the CNS at qathet.ca by following this link: qathet.ca/services/emergency-services/emergency-preparedness.
