CONSOLIDATE STORAGE: Texada Island Community Society requested that qathet Regional District provide permission to park a 20-foot storage trailer behind Texada Community Hall to store sandcastle weekend supplies.

qathet Regional District’s committee of the whole has recommended that the regional board approve two projects on Texada Island.

At the July 9 committee meeting, directors first recommended that the board approve a request from Texada Island Community Society and sandcastle weekend to place a 20-foot storage container behind Texada Community Hall in Gillies Bay, and that the board direct staff to arrange adequate liability insurance with the community society.

According to a staff report, the community society has several storage areas across Gillies Bay, mostly in private homes of volunteers. The society realized this was not a good setup and agreed to purchase a storage container for sandcastle weekend supplies, the report stated. The cost of the container, supplies and placement will be borne by the society.

The recommendation carried unanimously.

The committee then considered a recommendation that the board direct staff to seek funding opportunities to resurface the Texada Island tennis courts. According to a staff report, in March 2025, the regional board approved its five-year financial plan, with $12,000 being allocated to resurfacing the tennis courts.

Staff searched out bids and the project came back with an estimated bid of $50,000. Texada Island Recreation Commission, at its June 19 meeting, passed a motion that the recreation commission request the regional district board to direct staff to investigate and apply for grant opportunities to resurface the tennis courts.

At the committee meeting, Electoral Area A director Jason Lennox said pickleball and other racquet court sports are becoming more popular. He wondered if the resurfacing would negatively impact other uses. Electoral Area D alternate director Joseph Scott advised that courts are multi-purpose for a variety of sports.

The committee unanimously endorsed the recommendation.
