qathet Regional District’s (qRD) committee of the whole has referred a request to install a personal floatation device (PFD) loaner station on Texada Island to staff for a report.

At the February 9 committee of the whole meeting, regional district directors heard from Texada RCMP constable Micha Yakonowsky, who outlined the Kids Don’t Float program, which provides PFDs to children. The hope is to install a station at Shelter Point on Texada.

The program is sponsored by Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue and provides free day-use of PFDs for children. A loaner station is set up with colourful graphics, along with a supply of children’s PFDs. These boards are installed at marinas, boat launching ramps, parks and swimming areas.

According to a presentation from the Kids Don’t Float program, it runs on an honour system, for children to use the PFDs for on-water activity enjoyment and to return them at the end of the day. It is hoped that there will be 25 Kids Don’t Float installations around the province.
