Turnout rises slightly in City of Powell River election

Higher number of eligible voters results in one per cent increase of residents casting ballots

Voter turnout for the City of Powell River and School District 47 general election on October 20 was slightly higher than in 2014.

Of an eligible 10,670 voters, the total number of ballots cast was 4,841, which is 45 per cent, or one point more than the 4,358 in 2014. There were 835 more eligible voters than in 2014.

This past election, 1,350 votes, or 13 per cent, were from advance polls, special voting and mail-in ballots.

Breaking down the polling stations by number of ballots: Powell River Recreation Complex, 2,451; Brooks Secondary School, 281; Cranberry Seniors Centre, 458; and James Thomson Elementary School, 298.

Dave Formosa was re-elected mayor, along with four incumbents on city council: CaroleAnn Leishman, Maggie Hathaway, Rob Southcott and Jim Palm. Two new councillors, Cindy Elliott and George Doubt, were also voted in.

The new council will be sworn in on Tuesday, November 6.
