Lund resident Dr. Greg Cran has been hired to lead Vancouver Island University (VIU)’s Powell River campus.
Dr. David Witty, VIU provost and vice-president academic, announced to Powell River instructors that Cran had accepted the position Wednesday, June 25. His first full day on campus will be August 3.
Since Arlette Raaen, campus administrator in Powell River for more than 20 years, retired last fall, the university has employed temporary administrators while it sought a permanent replacement.
Cran comes to VIU from North Island College where he currently holds the position of Dean of University and Applied Studies and is Chair of the Research Ethics Board. He has worked as an administrator at Royal Roads University and taught at the University of Victoria in dispute resolution. Cran has past experience working for the BC government in treaty negotiations and policy analysis. He also has a broad range of international experience in teaching and working as a consultant to the World Bank Institute.
“Greg comes to us with a vision for the Powell River campus which aligns with our academic plan and the vision foreseen by the provost office,” Witty said. “He is keen to start working toward a reinvigorated model that includes that advent of new program ideas and business possibilities for skills development, which fits right in with his entrepreneurial spirit.”
