There are more than 15 varieties of zucchini, and possibly more. Most people in the qathet region grow the classic green, striped or romanesco zucchini. They are long, green and on the thin side, but there are also round zucchini, trombone-shaped zucchini and yellow ones.
The fruit is versatile, delicious and can be barbecued, sauteed and used in soups or desserts. One plant can produce up to six to 10 pounds of harvest over the growing season. That's a lot for one person or even a family to handle.
qathet resident Robin Lawson is one such person with too many zucchinis and wants to give away some of the bounty.
"Way too many, hence the freeing of them," said Lawson. "I only had one plant this year, a start from Springtime [Garden Centre] and it has just flourished with very little fuss over it."
Lawson said she's not really a dedicated gardener, as she doesn't have the time, but zucchinis are easy to grow.
"My favourite ways to prepare and eat zucchini are: gluten-free chocolate zucchini cake; zucchini sliced one-half to three-fourth inches thick, in a marinade and on the barbecue. Zucchini fritters, any recipe, are super easy to make and pair with your favourite dip," said Lawson.
Lawson passed along one of her favourite recipes from the food blog, Gluten-free on a Shoestring: glutenfreeonashoestring.com/gluten-free-chocolate-zucchini-cake.
