October 10, 1937 - December 29, 2023
obit

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Neil Allan Groat, who died peacefully at Evergreen Care Unit on December 29, 2023. He is survived by and will be greatly missed by his daughters Brenda (Randy) and Lisa (Steve), his two sisters (Marlene and Lorraine), and his two brothers (David and Keith). He was predeceased by his loving wife Hazel (1994) and his partner Pat (2019).

Neil was born in Vancouver on October 10, 1937. During the late 1950s, he ventured to Texada Island to work in the quarry mine as a truck driver. While there, he met his love Hazel, and they married in 1966.

From Texada, the couple headed to Powell River, where Neil worked in the pulp mill. In 1976, the family moved to North Vancouver. During 2000, Neil returned to Powell River to retire.

Neil had a love for life. He thoroughly enjoyed several sports at a competitive level, such as baseball, hockey and horseshoes. Somehow, he also found time for swimming and fishing, just for fun. His greatest accomplishment was his children, whom he adored and was so proud of.

For anyone who met Neil, it was obvious that he had a deep love for the community of Powell River.

He always had a smile and a hug for anyone.

Thank you to the staff and volunteers at the Evergreen Care Unit, and a very special thank-you to Patti, for your friendship, kindness, love, support, treats, endless games of crib and for being by Neil's side for the last months of his life.

No funeral will be provided. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to inclusionpr.ca/programs/seniors/better-at-home/.
