Fifty-five years ago today, on May 8, 1970, Regal Day was celebrated in honour of the Powell River Regals, who won the Hardy Cup Canadian Championship on April 21, 1970.
The team defeated Val D’Or Olympic Hockey Club of Quebec in a best-of-five series played at the Civic Arena in Westview, which is now a parking lot beside Willingdon Beach.
A detailed account of the series in the Powell River News was republished by the Peak in 2020, on the 50th anniversary of the historic victory.
