Cobras challenge provincial cup

City to host U13 soccer tournament

Approximately 250 of BC’s top U13 girls’ and boys’ soccer players arrived in Powell River today, Wednesday, July 6 in preparation for the BC Soccer Association Provincial B Cup Championships. Coming from all corners of the province, the young athletes will compete between July 7 and 10 at Sunset Park in Wildwood.

Eight visiting boys teams will vye for the title while seven visiting girls teams will challenge Powell River’s own U13 girls team, the Cobras, for provincial supremacy.

“The Cobras have enjoyed a very successful season thus far and have been training hard with their sights set on the championship,” said head coach Paul Liknes. “I’m looking forward to seeing how our local girls match up against their provincial peers.”

Round robin play begins on Thursday with games scheduled from 9 am until 5 pm on July 7, 8 and 9. The Cobras will play at 1 pm each day at Sunset Park’s upper field. Their first matchup will be against the Terrace Kermodies, followed by the Prince George Kodiaks and Squamish Fireballs. If all goes well, the team will advance to the finals, set to take place on Sunday, July 10 from 8 am until 3:30 pm.

Liknes, who is also president of Powell River Youth Soccer Association, said he not only has faith in his team, but in his community as well. “This is the first time provincials have been held in Powell River and I am confident that our volunteers and town will show that small towns can put on quality events such as this,” he said.

Residents are invited to watch the action throughout the weekend and cheer on the local girls. There will be a concession, 50/50 draws and a raffle table with profits supporting the various youth soccer rep teams in the community. A full match schedule is available here.
