Curling club to host provincial playdowns

Massullo tries to better last years second place

Vancouver Island and Upper Sunshine Coast teams will meet in Powell River on February 3 to begin the first stage of a journey to compete at the 2012 Canadian Masters Curling Championships.

Only one team will advance from each province and territory to compete at the national finals, and vying for top position in BC will be a handful of local teams.

“There’ll be three local teams, along with seven others from the region, competing for their place in Canadian curling history,” said Jim Sawka, Masters playdown chair. The Felix Massullo rink is back again, hoping to go all the way this year. Last year Massullo came within one shot of representing BC. Sawka will be skipping the second men’s team, while Marlene Hall rink will represent the women.

Events begin at 1 pm on Friday, February 3 at Powell River Curling Club with playdowns continuing through Sunday. “The public is encouraged to come out and support our local rinks and enjoy what promises to be some excellent curling,” said Sawka. Admission is free and refreshments will be available.
