Powell River outdoor athletes had a strong showing at the Atmosphere Mind Over Mountain Adventure Race (MOMAR) in Cumberland on Saturday, September 24.
With 50-kilometre and 30-kilometre routes that included kayaking, mountain biking, trekking, bushwhacking and orienteering through 27 checkpoints, the race proved a challenge to even the fittest. A total of 275 racers took part in the event including a handful from Powell River who ended the day with impressive results.
Team Winchell Go-Nuts, featuring Powell River’s Patricia and Brad Winchell, placed first overall for the 30-kilometre sports course, finishing in just over four hours and 15 minutes.
The mother/daughter team of Wanda Griffioen and Anamieke Tataryn, team Footprints, tackled the 30-kilometre course and came in ninth in the team of two, female category.
“Seeing her get so fit, I think it’s something cool to pass on,” said Griffioen. “If I can sit back now and have passed the torch, I’m happy with that. I’ll volunteer and watch my kid run through.”
“Biking’s not usually my strong point but I really enjoyed the bike ride,” said Tataryn.
Chris Bratseth, Graham Cocksedge, Erik Hanson and Lucien Ervington came together to form team Rippen the River and came in second in the team of four, male category and 11th overall on the 50-kilometre enduro course. They finished in just under six hours.
