Pick-up ultimate starts

Everyone welcome in fun fast sport
Pick-up ultimate starts

Discs will be tossed, superman fly dives completed and there will be plenty of stacking at the Powell River Pick-up Ultimate games starting Wednesday, May 4 at Oceanview Secondary School field.

No idea what any of that means? Here’s a chance to find out. Ultimate is the sports sensation that has been sweeping the nation and now it has glided for a touchdown in Powell River. This fun, self-refereed, social game is a great way to meet people, play a challenging, exciting sport in a relaxed atmosphere and get a good workout on a Wednesday night.

Ultimate is a non-contact sport played with a Frisbee disc that is passed up the field and caught in the end zone for a point. Two sides of seven players square off against each other for this non-contact sport where players cannot run with the disc, only pass to teammates who are dodging the defence and trying to get open. The defence tries to intercept discs, block shots and make life hard for the offence. It’s like football but mixed with a little basketball and a sprinkle of soccer. Only, with a Frisbee.

The fast-paced game requires a lot of running but it is all well worth it to be the player who makes the knee slide catch in the corner of the end zone for that game-winning snag. All are welcome to join in for this fun, casual and highly social sport. No experience is necessary and all players need to bring is a light and a dark shirt, some water and preferably soccer cleats. Teams will be picked on the spot, hence the two tone shirts, and rules and strategy explained in detail on the field.

To play is free and no commitment is required. Games start at 7 pm but showing up a little early to warm up is recommended. This is a coed sport. Games will continue every Wednesday throughout the summer. For more information readers can visit the Powell River Pick-Up Ultimate Facebook page or call 604.414.8820.
