Powell River U18 rep hockey team wins Vancouver Island championship

Ross Ciarniello scores winning goal in second period at Hap Parker Arena

Ross Ciarniello scored twice to lead Powell River’s U18 rep hockey team to a 3-2 win over Triport at Hap Parker Arena in game two of the best-of-three Vancouver Island Amateur Hockey Association (VIAHA) Tier 3 championship series on March 5.

Braedyn Louie scored the lone goal of the first period for Powell River. Triport equalized in period two, then Ciarniello restored the lead on a power play, and added the eventual game and series winner seconds later after the faceoff at centre ice.

Triport cut the lead to 3-2 at the 13-minute mark of the third period and had a four-minute power play opportunity but were unable to tie the game.

Shots on goal were 39-35 in favour of the visitors.

Powell River won game one by the same 3-2 score in Port McNeill on February 27.

The provincial U18 Tier 3 championship tournament takes place in Port Hardy from March 19 to 23.
