Powell River Villa hosted Vancouver Island Soccer League (VISL) Division II squad Gorge United in a Jackson Cup round of 16 match on February 17 at Timberlane Park.

A late second half rally was needed for the VISL Division 1 home team to dispatch of the challengers from Victoria. Jacob Duyvesteyn broke a 1-1 tie in the 89th minute, then Jerod Timothy added insurance with a goal one minute later to secure the win and a berth in the quarterfinal round.

Timothy’s goal was his second of the day; he also opened the scoring in the first half at the 25-minute mark. Gorge equalized 10 minutes later.

Villa's next challenge will be daunting. Another Gorge team, this time the current Division 1 leaders, will host Powell River on Saturday, February 24 (6 pm), at Hampton Park in Victoria. The winner will advance to the semi-finals.

The Jackson Cup is VISL’s version of the FA Cup in England and has been contested since 1915. Villa hoisted the trophy in 1991, 1995, 1997 and 2000. Regular league play will resume in March.
