BOCCE BALLERS: Special Olympics-Powell River runs its bocce program weekly at Larry Gouthro Park.

Shaw Communications is once again teaming up with the BC Hockey League (BCHL) for a text-to-donate initiative called Brighter Communities.

Last year for the inaugural campaign, which targets making a difference in the lives of children and youth in each of the 17 communities the league has teams, the Kings chose Special Olympics-Powell River as its beneficiary. The hockey club will continue that partnership in 2022.

“We are very grateful that the Kings have chosen us again as the recipient of the text-to-donate program,” said Special Olympics-Powell River coordinator Jackie Milsom. “They have been a huge ally to us for many years and we are very appreciative of their ongoing support.”

Milsom said Special Olympics has been opening up local programs over the past few months.

“It’s been exciting for all of us, but especially for the athletes; they are thrilled to be back participating in their sports and reconnecting with their friends and coaches,” she added. “Curling, golf, aquatics, floor hockey, and more recently, bocce has started up. Bocce is a program many of our athletes of varying ages can take part in, so we are happy to be able to offer the opportunity for our athletes to get back out again.”

Funds raised through the text-to-donate program will be used toward purchasing equipment, facility rentals and travel to tournaments, according to Milsom.

“Many of our athletes live on a fixed income, so we try to limit any cost to participating in our programs for them,” she said. “It’s an exciting time to be able to be offering our athletes an opportunity to get back into their regular programs that they have missed so much, so we appreciate any support we receive to help us to provide our athletes with the chance to continue to participate, take part in sport and reconnect with their community.”

Supporters can make a $10 donation up until May 31, 2022, by texting a charity’s unique code to 41010. The code to donate to Special Olympics-Powell River is: PRKIDS.

Shaw will match every donation dollar-for-dollar, up to a total of $3,000 per charity.
