Streak continues for soccer club

Confidence builds for O35 players

Powell River United O35 Soccer Club was on the road Sunday travelling to Denman Island to play Islands United FC. United headed down with 14 players all hoping to repeat their performance they had a few weeks ago at home versus Denman when they took a 3-1 win.

The game started with United dominating play and keeping solid possession of the ball. The sustained pressure had Denman on its heels right from the first whistle. United was quick to get on the board when a ball was sent up the pitch to Darren Mousseau who calmly chested it down to Dean Piccinin. Piccinin did what he does best and ran by the defender to place the ball into the back of the net.

United kept the pressure on and was again rewarded for its hard work and composure. It received a corner kick that was sent into the box to Shehzad Somji who placed a perfect full volley into the net.

United’s defence line of Dave Foley, Ron Hollingsworth, Derek Veenhof and Tony Rice kept the home team’s chances to a minimum. When Denman did have a chance goalie Rick Bombardir was there to clean it up. The half ended 2-0 for Powell River.

The second half started much the same as the first with Powell River dominating play and ball possession. Because of this United was awarded a penalty shot when Mousseau was taken down in the box. Mousseau stepped up and firmly hit the ball, beating the keeper and making it count. United was now up 3-0.

Denman was able to come back and after a ball was sent into the box, and a scramble ensued, a Denman player got his foot on the ball and drilled it into the top corner giving Bombardir no chance of getting a hand on it.

United stayed very composed after the goal and kept pressing, knowing that another goal was in its sights. This goal came when Steve Orchiston took the ball around the 25-yard mark and hammered a shot into the net, beating the Denman goalie who never moved and just watched it sail by.

Denman scored one more on a partial breakaway that happened due to a lapse in communication in the back line, but was unable to take any more. United had a couple more good chances that did not convert ending the game 4-2 Powell River.

United has maintained its unbeaten streak with a 4-0-1 record and looks to keep the ball rolling on Sunday, November 6, when the team travels to Qualicum. Readers interested in following United can visit the team’s website.
