United ready for first round of provincials

Sixteen teams battle for masters

Powell River United O35 soccer team begins its quest for a provincial title this Sunday when it plays in its first-round game of the BC Masters Provincial Cup.

United will be one of four teams representing Vancouver Island Soccer League in the 16-team tournament with the winner taking home the title of provincial champion.

United drew a home game for the first round against North Delta SC Rangers from Fraser Valley Soccer League. “We are pretty happy with the draw that we got,” said defender Derek Veenhof. “It’s a definite advantage to play here as the mainland teams are not used to the travel and you seem to get your best squad out for your home games.”

North Delta sits third in its league with eight wins, three draws and five losses scoring 24 goals for and allowing 23 against. “When you get to this stage all the teams are good,” said Veenhof. “It’s the top 16 teams in BC left.”

Kickoff is 1 pm on Sunday, April 15, at Sunset Park.
