Cobras take place among best teams of BC
Youth to host soccer provincials

Sunset Park in Wildwood will be the setting for this year’s U13 soccer boys and girls B cup provincials, July 7 through 10.

This event will be co-hosted by Powell River Soccer Association and the Upper Island Soccer Association. All games are scheduled to be played between 9 am and 5 pm each day.

The finals involve teams from all over the province and include Powell River’s own U13 girls’ team, the Cobras, who have qualified as Coastal Cup finalists. There will be eight teams in each of the girls and boys divisions meaning the city will be swamped with approximately 270 out-of-town players as well as coaches and family members. The effect this will have on the hotels, motels, bed and breakfasts, restaurants, stores, et cetera will be huge.

Standard of play promises to be excellent as all of the teams have earned their right to attend the biggest tournament of the soccer year. The hometown girls are coming off an excellent season and hope to cap it off with a successful tournament. Some of the participants remain a mystery as the interior and northern parts of BC are just starting their season. However, they will be in game form as they end their season and come to the tournament. For the coastal teams it will be more difficult to maintain momentum as the season ended in May and teams need to find a way to be ready two months down the road.

As always, hosting a tournament of this magnitude takes many volunteers. Interested readers wishing to assist are asked to please contact Paul Liknes at 604.485.4885 or pliknes@telus.net.
