Three small wildfires reported in Powell River region

Lightning strikes cause fires

Three small wildfires are burning in the Powell River region, all estimated at 0.01 hectares, according to the BC wildfire dashboard.

Fire information officer Dorothy Jakobsen at the coastal fire centre in Parksville said fires had been reported at Wilde Creek, between the Lund area and Okeover Inlet, as well as two small fires in the Toba Inlet region at Little Toba River and Attwood Bay.

“The suspected causes are natural,” said Jakobsen. “These are all from the lightning, I’m sure.”

“They are still spot fires which are still evolving. The lightning storm blew through.”

Jakobsen said the BC Wildfire Service has been able to get in the air and have seen the little lightning fires popping up.

“We are responding and assessing with initial attack crews and helicopters,” said Jakobsen. “We are not concerned at this stage. We are hoping they will be brought under control quickly. We knew it was happening so we got in the air as soon as possible to see. We’ve had lots of phone reports from people reporting the smoke, which is great. We thank the public for helping us.”

Jakobsen said the hope is that the fires will be out quickly. She said there is still a bit of rain, which will hopefully prevent the spread of the fires.
