Lottie Mae Blackburn, October 4, 1949 – March 28, 2012

Our mother passed away peacefully on March 28, having moved to Powell River only five months ago from Bella Coola, where she lived for the past 38 years.

She was not what you would consider “local” but she did the best she could to talk with everyone she met. She loved people. Lottie lived mainly at Powell River General Hospital. The fourth floor staff took very good care of her. Our mother, on the other hand, thought she should be taking care of the other patients too. “I took nursing in high school,” she’d say. Those nurses had their hands full with “Lottie on shift.”

Besides doting on her “patients” Lottie, a diabetic, liked to take any sweets left uneaten on their trays. She would hoard the packets of peanut butter and jam and steal brownies for her midnight snack only to send her sugar levels through the roof! She would leave notes for the maintenance crew to oil a squeaky door and “borrow” the Christmas decorations from the lounge to decorate other patients’ rooms. She herself loved to laugh and tried to make people happy.

Lottie moved over to Evergreen Extended Care Unti (EECU) a month before she passed, meeting a whole other set of nurses for her to “set straight.” We can only imagine what she’s doing in heaven with the good Lord!

Lottie leaves behind her children Clint Blackburn (Carly Felker), Brandy (Tor) Birtig, Falken (Kip) Gaudry and grandchildren Darian, Amanda, Olivia, Naomi, Xavier, Paige, Taylor, Mayanna and Kaylib, as well as many family and friends back home.

The family would like to extend their gratitude to the fourth floor and EECU staff for looking after our mother, as well as Dr. McDonald for his compassion and understanding in helping Lottie. What a woman!

A family celebration of life will be held at a later date.
