Anne Louise Layton
The family of Louise Layton is sad to announce Louise's death, April 20, 2012. She passed away peacefully at home in Powell River. She is survived by her four children Melinda (Keith), Jeannie (Bruce), Nancy (Ben), Billy (Lorelei), grandchildren Fraser, Kelsey, Rhonda, Nikki, Amy, Jesse, Lukah, Sierra, Storey, Fayre, Hayes and Yellowbird and great-grandchildren Josh, Dylan and Jervis.
Born and raised in rural Saskatchewan, Louise moved to Vancouver where the stylish, golden-haired beauty enjoyed city life by the sea.
In radio school, the line, “there’s a seat back here, blondie!” led to marriage and four children. Louise was a stay-at-home mum and gave her life to her husband and children, sewing, knitting and cooking fabulous meals.
Building a cabin on Gambier Island shone light on her machete-wielding, salal-burning and wood-chopping skills, not to mention her ability to back a boat down the ramp "like a man."
In the mid-’80s she and Bill spent a couple of sun- and fun-filled years in Australia. Upon their return to Canada, Bill and Louise relocated to Horseshoe Bay where she joined the local seniors’ woodworking class and eventually became an instructor.
In 2003, Louise moved to Powell River. As the proud matriarch of Nancy’s Bakery, she enjoyed making new friends and was often the life of the party!
Thanks to all of you who made her last years so rich. Lastly, thanks to great-grandson Jervis Rose for the love and laughter he brought to her last year.
Louise, you were loved and will be sorely missed.
In the silence many memories of the heart will be written!
Larry Gordon DeWynter, August 4, 1941 - July 26, 2012
It is with great sadness we announce that Larry has left us after a battle with cancer. He was predeceased by his wife Diane and is survived by his children Michael (Wendy), Brenda (Marc) and grandchildren Mackenzie and Anna.
Larry was born in Saskatchewan and moved to Powell River as a young boy. He began working for the Macmillan Bloedel mill and worked his way up through his 35 years of service. Larry retired early to enjoy the sun of Mexico and time with friends and family.
Larry loved boating, fishing, hunting and picking mushrooms and salal. He participated in many activities and clubs: baseball in his younger years, 10-pin bowling, curling, lawn bowling and the ATV club. Together with Diane, he enjoyed playing cards with their long-time friends #52.
Thank you to Dr Watson and the staff at Evergreen Extended Care Unit. Your commitment to Larry’s care was remarkable. The family’s gratitude is also sent to Larry’s long-time friends and close family; bless you.
A tea to celebrate Larry's life will be held on Thursday, August 2 at 2 pm at Powell River Lawn Bowling Club, 5714 Marine Avenue. Family and friends are welcome to attend. No service by request. The family respectfully requests donations in lieu of flowers to Powell River Hospital Foundation.
Larry’s greatest love was his gal Sal; their souls are now together forever.
Else Klara Johanna Dehmel, April 24, 1920 - July 24, 2012
It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our beloved mother and grandmother. Elli was predeceased by her husband Gerhard and is survived by her three children, five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Born in Breslau, Germany, Elli immigrated to Ontario in 1957 and moved to Powell River in 2000 to live with her daughter. Mom greatly appreciated the beauty that surrounds us. She was a true nature lover.
Our appreciation and heartfelt thank you to the compassionate and loving staff at Olive Devaud Residence. Words cannot express how deeply we appreciate all the care you provided. To Dr. Schweitzer, we are very thankful that mom was in your professional, compassionate care. To my wonderful and caring friends, thank you for all the support during this difficult time.
Death leaves a heartache no one can heal,
love leaves a memory no one can steal.
Mom, you are loved and in our hearts forever.
No service by request.
Silvano Domenico Mastrodonato, September 23, 1945 – July 26, 2012
It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden and tragic passing of Silvano Mastrodonato on July 26, 2012.
Born in Bagnoli Del Trigno, Italy he came to Canada in 1963. He leaves behind his wife of 44 years Bea, his children Dave (Erin), John (Ximena) and Mike (Jodi). He also leaves behind his six grandchildren Alex, Samantha, Keaton, Cohen, Mia and Emma; brothers Costanzo (Ermelinda), Pietro, Arnaldo (Dina), sister Lidia, brothers-in-law Vito (Jo-Ella) and Alvin (Kathleen) and many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents Enrico and Angelina, brother Lionello, niece Assunta and nephew Enrico.
He will be remembered for his kindness, his hard work ethic, his generosity toward others, his infectious smile and his dedication to his faith and his family. He worked in the pulp and paper mill in Powell River for 35 ½ years where he was known as “Little Sam.” He retired in 2002 at the age of 56. In his retirement he enjoyed fishing, gardening and projects around the house but his favourite pastime was helping others with their projects. He was never able to say “no” when asked by someone for help. Many will remember him as a small man with a huge heart.
Our family would like to extend thanks to Dr. Naude, Dr. Rossouw, Father Neufeld and the wonderful neighbours who tried to help.
Prayers were held on Monday, July 30 at 7 pm at the Church of the Assumption and the funeral mass was held at 10:30 am on Tuesday also from the church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada, Powell River General Hospital or Assumption Church Building Fund.
