Maurice Donald “Woody” Woods – December 31, 1933 - August 14, 2013
Woody, in his eightieth year, passed away peacefully in his sleep at Chinook Regional Hospital in Lethbridge, Alberta. Woody was predeceased by his wife of 49 years, Noelle Audrey Catherine Woods nee Hutton of Victoria, BC in 2005, his sister Barbara Bussey in 2010, grandson Maurice Damon Woods in 2011, and brother Timothy Woods in 2012. Woody is survived by two brothers Francis Woods of Creston, BC and Clark Woods of Onslow, NS as well as two sisters Natalie Woods of Toronto, Ontario and Elizabeth Otter of River John, NS. Woody is also survived by his four children and their spouses Bob and Lyndia Kirkpatrick of Mayne Island, BC, Drew and Novi Woods of Powell River, BC, Shane and Tami Woods of Lethbridge, AB and Travis and Rosanne Woods of Fort Saint John, BC as well as 13 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Woody was born in Onslow, Nova Scotia. He grew up a typical mischievous farm boy, eldest son of Maurice and Mildred Woods. In 1952 Woody enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force and was posted to Summerside, PEI where he fell head-over-heels in love with Lancaster’s and a “very cute” dental assistant. He and Noelle were married on April 14, 1956. His career with the air force spanned 23 years, during which he and his young family were posted to Trenton, Ont, Zweibrucken “3-Wing” Germany and finally to Greenwood, Nova Scotia where he retired as Master Warrant Officer in 1975. After retiring from the air force, Woody and Noelle choose to settle down in the Annapolis Valley. There, Woody tried his hand at several entrepreneurial ventures eventually becoming a rural mail contractor for Canada Post for 12 years, a job which conveniently allowed him to spend more time keeping his rambunctious kids on the straight and narrow and to devote time to his passions of keeping large dogs, wood working and growing the best darned garden around. In 1989 with all their children now living “out west” with young families of their own, Woody and Noelle once again packed up, dogs and all, and moved clear across the country from one coast to the other, eventually choosing to put down roots in Gilles Bay on Texada Island, BC.
Our Dad taught us that life is a journey and that it is full of adventure at every turn....and oh boy, did we have some adventures. He taught us to be inquisitive, humble, objective, and accountable. He taught us that hard work and dogged perseverance will indeed move an absolutely, truly massive, mound of dirt and rock. He instilled in all of us a love for our natural world he taught us to have fun, to be creative and to take some time just to smell the roses. He taught us that we are the masters of our own destiny through the choices we make and above all...he taught us all how to grow the best darned gardens around.
We will miss you Dad.
A memorial service to celebrate Woody’s life will be held from 1 - 3 pm on October 5 at Gilles Bay Community Hall.
