Thomas (Tom) James Leishman, October 4, 1937 – February 17, 2013

Tom was born and raised in Sudbury, Ontario. He is survived by his wife Myrna, daughter Carole Ann (Mark), son Tye (Jeanette), grandson James, sister Ann Buckland of Campbell River, brother Chuck (Stephanie) of Elko, BC, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Maude and Clarence Leishman, and son Clark in 1961.

Tom’s early working career was with Bell Telephone Company for 11 years before Myrna and Tom headed west to settle in Powell River in 1968. He spent his remaining 30 years of working life with BC Tel. Tom took up his Private Pilot’s licence in the early 70s, flying hither and yon for the next 20 years, and enjoyed the company of the Westview Flying Club members. He loved to talk about the J-3 flights across the country, and the Antique Air Race and periodic trips to the Oshkosh Air Show. Many fly-outs and fly-ins, parties and dances were part of life in those years.

Fortunately, Tom and Myrna were able to have a “cabin up-the-lake” where they spent many summers sunning and swimming. Tom loved to “kick back” with a beer in hand.

Over the years, he never missed hockey practices, hockey games, figure skating events (working the spotlights for ice shows), theatre productions, or anything involving his family.

There will be no service. Donations in lieu of flowers in Tom’s memory may be sent to the Powell River Community Foundation, PO Box 335, Powell River, BC V8A 5C2.

Tom will be greatly missed and always remembered for his quick, dry sense of humour which he maintained to the end.

Cassidy Alexandra Safruik, March 20, 1996 – February 17, 2013

Our Beautiful Daughter

When you were born, you never came with instructions

We made mistakes along the way and for those we’re sorry

We are far from being perfect parents, but we have always done the best we could

The mistakes we have made come from lack of understanding, not a lack of love

Because from the moment you were born into our life,

we knew we would love you with everything that we have

On that first day, we looked into your eyes and

all our dreams came true

We love you more than you will ever know,

Now and For all Eternity

Cassidy is survived by her loving parents, Jerry and Wendy, brother and sister Dylan and Cydnie, grandparents Sandy and Wally Pence, Evelyn and Stuart Safruik Ashworth, great-grandmothers Helen Beatty and Elizabeth Jordan, aunts and uncles Michelle and Andy Vestering, Doug and Kristi Jordan, Ron and Audrey MacMillan, Tom and Darcy Safruik, Terry and Janice Safruik, her loving foster parents Rebecca and Bruce Davies, cousins Dustin, Jesse, Jake and Jordan Vestering, Daniel and Alex Jordan, Chris, Steven, Paul, Michael and Samantha Safruik, many other family members and friends. Waiting for Cassie in heaven are her two Grandpas Allen Jordan and Alex Safruik and her friends Nick and Hayden.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday February 24, from 2 to 4 pm at the Eagles Hall, 1999 - 14th Avenue, Campbell River. In lieu of flowers a donation may be made to BC Children's Hospital.

Karan Hunter, January 6, 1941 - February 17, 2013

Karan passed away peacefully in Powell River General Hospital. He was born and raised in Port Alberni and moved to Powell River in 1965 where he apprenticed and worked in the mill as a Millwright until he retired in 2001.

Karan was predeceased by his precious daughter Jennifer who passed away from cystic fibrosis in 1998. He was a founding member of Powell River’s local cystic fibrosis chapter and continued to believe in its good work until the day he passed. Karan was a volunteer fireman at No. 2 fire hall for many years. He loved boating and spent many happy years in his much loved cabin up Powell Lake.

Karan is survived by his wife of 49 years Cherrie, son Steve and four grandchildren Marissa, Bryce, Jordan and Lauren. Karan also has one sister Kathleen who resides in Abbotsford. A small family service was held on Thursday, February 21. A celebration of life will take place at a later date. Donations in Karan’s memory can be made to Cystic Fibrosis Canada, Campbell River Chapter, 573 Nature Park Drive, Campbell River, V9W 7Z9.
