Laurence Charles Robinson, August 1, 1922 - December 27, 2010

High Flight

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of earth

And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;

Sunward I’ve climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth

Of sun-split clouds — and done a hundred things

You have not dreamed of — wheeled and soared and swung

High in the sunlit silence. Hov’ring there

I’ve chased the shouting wind along, and flung

My eager craft through footless halls of air.

Up, up the long delirious, burning blue,

I’ve topped the windswept heights with easy grace

Where never lark or even eagle flew —

And, while with silent lifting mind I’ve trod

The high untrespassed sanctity of space,

Put out my hand and touched the face of God.

William (Bill) Ralph Price, July 16, 1925 - December 26, 2010

It is with great sadness we announce the sudden passing of Bill. He was predeceased by his parents Victor and Helen. Family meant the world to Bill. He will be dearly missed by his wife of 62 years Lorraine, his children Larry (Jan), Val (Kevin), Bonnie (Dax), grandchildren Jacki (Andrew), Tracy (Duffy), Amy (Lucas) and Wil and great-grandchildren Hayden, Keyton, Amanda, Dan, and Osha. Bill is also survived by his brothers Frank (Lilly), Ron (Marion) as well as many nieces, nephews and extended family and friends who will all feel a void in their lives.

Bill was born in Comox in 1925. Although living in Powell River he spent many summers in Comox staying with his Granny Price and cousins. Bill ran off to join the Navy at the young age of 16. He served in the North Atlantic on HMCS Stormont. This is where the mystery began regarding the loss of his first finger! He was proud to serve his country and attended many reunions with his shipmates over the years. Bill met and married the love of his life Lorraine in 1948, starting their family in 1950. Bill was always his own boss. He and Lorraine operated the taxi business in Powell River until he moved “the girls” to Comox in 1972, where he joined his cousin “CB” in a new career of house construction. He took pride in the houses they built, including his own that the family moved into in 1975.

There will be no service as per Bill’s wishes. A gathering to celebrate his life will be held at a later date. The family asks that in lieu of flowers kindly consider donating to Relay for Life Team Scotia (at Comox branch) or the Michael Bro Heart Transplant Trust fund at the Medicine Shoppe, Comox.

Gloria Irene Wick

Born on August 11, 1952 in Naniamo, BC, died on December 31, 2010 in Powell River, BC.

Gloria was an artist, lover, daughter, sister, mother, master planner, wife and wild child all wrapped up in a woman whose love for her family, and sense of responsibility, meant she would worry for and take care of any and all she thought in need. Gloria was born in Nanaimo, BC and grew up in a loving and beautiful home created by her father, Walter Wick and mother Marjorie Irene Wick (née Buchan), along with sister Patti Stockwell (née Wick). Although Gloria did not receive formal post secondary education, she was a life-long learner in the accounting, administrative, and fine arts. She showed her work in several galleries, most recently at Artique Artists Co-operative in Powell River, and some of her favourite moments in life were spent with a paint brush in hand, looking out from her studio, listening to the birds, and painting sun-kissed west coast scenes and skies.

In her early 20s, Gloria lived in Victoria where she met and married a Navy man, John Richard Thistle, and in 1975, Gloria gave birth to her daughter Patricia Marian Thistle. After separating from her husband and their subsequent divorce, Gloria went in search of a new beginning in a familiar setting, moving with Tricia to Nanaimo, BC.

Never one to shy from love, it always came to find her. In Gloria's early 40s, at the hands of her sister and the sister of her husband, Gloria was first introduced to Kenneth James Day, and the two began a deep and abiding friendship as pen pals. Ken and the rest of his family were quick to embrace Gloria as part of their family and so began the last 15-year love affair the two have shared together.

Known for her laughter, love and exuberance for life Gloria found a great many kindred spirits along her journey. She lived in Victoria, Nanaimo, Portland, Oregon, Vancouver and found her most recent community in Powell River.

Gloria is predeceased by her mother Marjorie. She is survived by her husband Ken Day, father Walter Wick, daughter 'Shone' Patricia Thistle and daughter-in-law Christine Lorraine Davey, step-daughter Jacquie Gillespie (née Day) and son-in-law Chris Gillespie, Jenny Day and son-in-law Tom Komisarski, Kristie Day and son-in-law Larry Renner, sister Patti Stockwell (née Wick) and brother-in-law Jim Stockwell, step-mother Carol Syme (née Mahaffey) step-sister Lisa Singer (née Barton) and brother-in-law Bill Singer and step-brother Robert Barton, former step-sons Tyler and Kyle, niece Jordan Singer, nephew Kayden Singer and grandchildren Andrew, Caroline, Luke and Jack and a great many more whom she would call family.

Gloria passed after a courageous battle with lung cancer. She lived as she died, fiercely independent and filled with gratitude.

In lieu of flowers to the family, it was Gloria's wish that donations be made to The Variety Club of British Columbia, the Christian Children’s Fund of Canada or any charity of your choice in her name.

A celebration of life will be held Saturday, January 8 at 3 pm, at St. David and St. Paul Anglican Church in Powell River, with arrangements entrusted to Stubberfield Funeral Home Ltd. If you wish to express condolences, please visit the funeral home’s website.

Bev Hopkins

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our mom, grandma and great-grandma Bev Hopkins on Sunday, December 26, 2010. Mom was born June 24, 1940 in Erkisdale, Manitoba. After raising her family in Brandon, Manitoba she moved to Powell River in 1978.

Mom was predeceased by her parents Rita & William Roman and her brother Edwin. She leaves to mourn her daughter Cathy Brydges (Jamie), son Jim (aka Butch) and Brenda, granddaughter Stacy (Ryan), great-grandson Damien and granddaughter Amanda. Mom also had a special international student staying with her whom we know as Kuba Mach. She will be sadly missed by her brothers Bill, Laverne, Doug and her sisters Vel and Mabel, nieces, nephews, other family members, great friends too numerous to mention as well as her beloved pets Bud, Pita and Ralph.

Mom was always involved in activities that had to do with her family. There was Brownies, Guides, Sea Cadets, music, camping, anything that had us spending time together. We have many fond memories of our family gatherings singing and playing piano or accordion. Mom was one of the first “mail ladies” in Canada 40 years ago. In 1978 she transferred to Powell River Post Office and retired in 2000. She always had a stash of dog treats in her mailbag for her special four-legged friends along her routes. There always were extra people in our house all the time as Mom became a long-time Foster Parent and opened her home to those who needed a roof over their heads and a place to feel safe.

In 1983 Mom learned how to swim and then in 1984 she got her scuba diving certificate. The next year we were all diving together exploring the underwater world. Mom enjoyed her dancing. She was part of the Sunshine Coast Cloggers and also square danced with the Stardusters. Not surprising was that Mom started up the Alexander Belles to perform for the Legion and seniors in Powell River. A great time was had by all with plenty of skits and songs. There was also a band that she played in for the Old Timers.

Later on Mom started taking international students. They came from India, Taiwan, Czech Republic, Quebec, Brazil and China just to name a few. Mom became a licensed Ham Radio operator known as VE7FLC.

The memorial for Bev will be held Thursday, January 6 at 2 pm at the Westview Baptist Church. Please come and celebrate her life with us. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the SPCA or the charity of your choice.

Special thanks to all of her friends and family who came to visit at the hospital and phoned to see how she was doing. Carol and Jean, your help was appreciated and so comforting. John, thank you for taking care of the household and animals during Mom’s many hospital stays.
