Softly she was going up, And a star or two beside."
Sidney Alfred Arkell, July 20, 1927 – January 12, 2012
Sid is gone. A passing moment has come to be. With it ends the suffering and discomfort. His wish was to leave this world with both legs in tact and this he accomplished.
Sid was born in Comox, BC, on July 20, 1927. For two very important years (1950/51), at the age of 23, Sid enlisted as a member of the RCEME (Royal Canadian Electrical Mechanical Engineers), during the Korean War.
He was a real man who was not afraid to cry over a sad book or movie, a man with a big heart. He loved his family and three children Bonnie, Beverly and Doug; and his loving and devoted wife Diane, as well as grandchildren Kelsey, Curtis, Cassandra and Mariah. Sid also leaves behind his brothers Frank (Carol) and Tom (Roberta) and their families. He will be missed by Diane’s family of eight brothers and sisters from New Brunswick and Alberta. Sid may be gone but he will never be forgotten.
We wish to thank Dr. Morwood and the staff of Family Tree Clinic, as well as all the nurses from Emergency, ICU, fourth floor, and home care support at Powell River General Hospital. We are very grateful.
A celebration of Sid’s life will be held on Saturday, January 21, from 11 am to 1 pm at the Royal Canadian Legion Powell River Branch 164 (downstairs area). Please come share memories with us. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Powell River Action Centre Food Bank or the Salvation Army. Arrangements entrusted to Stubberfield Funeral Home.
Toivo "Oscar" Kokkinen, March 26, 1938 - December 21, 2011
Oscar came from Finland to Canada, on a bet from one of his brothers in the 1960s. He worked in logging camps and then moved to Powell River where he made his home and worked for the mill for 35 years. He enjoyed many things and loved having a Tim Hortons coffee every day – it was his coffee place. Oscar was a man with a genuine heart and loving spirit. He was everyone’s "Dad and friend." Predeceased by his wife Rose, he is survived by his daughter Heather.
Celebration of Oscar’s Life will be announced at a later date. Flowers and cards may be sent to Heather Kokkinen, #3 - 5845 Arbutus Avenue, Powell River, BC V8A 4R9. Donations may be made to the Salvation Army of Powell River.
