Betty Parker (née Yourechuk), November 30, 1942 - January 15, 2014
It is with great sadness that we announce Betty’s passing at the age of 71 after a brief battle with cancer. Betty was well known for her kind and generous nature and for her perogies! She was a resident of Powell River for 52 years and will be sorely missed by her many friends and family.
Betty was the youngest of eight children. She was predeceased by her parents Fred and Katie Yourechuk and four of her siblings John, Mary Yarocki, Helen Segade and Irene Hall. She is survived by her sister Doreen Wood and brothers Nick and Mike. She is also survived by her husband Richard, her children Scott (Julie), Brent (Jovelyn) and Jennifer (Chad), and six grandchildren who she was very proud of Hanna, Cameron, Jackson, Danica, Kyler and Rylan.
A celebration of Betty’s life will be held at Powell River United Church on Friday, January 24 at 1 pm. In lieu of flowers the family requests that a donation be made in Betty’s name to Powell River Health-Care Auxiliary or the Canadian Cancer Society.
Nellie Marion MacArthur, August 30, 1914 - January 13, 2014
After celebrating her 100th Christmas with her family, Nellie passed peacefully from this life on January 13, 2014.
Nellie was predeceased by her parents Daniel and Ella Reid, her husband and love of her life Charles, sisters Mary and Evelyn, brothers Earl and Archie and her cherished grandson Jason. She is survived by her daughter Jeanette (Barry) Scott, son Allan, grandchildren Tamara (Darryl) Colebank, Sìne (Brent) Chernenkoff, Francis (Phomany) Scott, Ryan (Nicole) MacArthur, Carmen (Leon) Janzen and Kimberley Rodgerson, great-grandchildren Brittany and Cricket Colebank, Sarah and Aidan Chernenkoff, Addison and Marissa MacArthur and Nokomi and Jamal Rodgerson as well as a number of nieces and nephews.
Nellie was a faithful churchgoer and kept active throughout her life. She was a keen lawn bowler, winning a gold medal at the BC Seniors’ Games when she was in her 80s. She enjoyed playing bridge and watching baseball and curling. In celebration of her 95th birthday, Nellie travelled across Canada and at a stop in Toronto, was delighted to cheer her beloved Blue Jays to a win.
The family wishes to thank the staff of Olive Devaud Residence and Dr. Jacques Du Toit for their compassion and care. Service of Christian burial was held on January 17 in Powell River. Donations in Nellie’s memory may be made to the Canadian Bible Society or a charity of your choice.

With great sadness and heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our mother, who was a historian of Powell River and a very strong and courageous woman. She is survived by her son Bud (Diane), three daughters Gloria, Babe and Dee as well as grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She will be missed deeply.
Margaret Catherine “Cathie” Behan (née Thoburn), June 20, 1946 – January 15, 2014
It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Cathie at the age of 67, after a courageous battle with cancer. She was predeceased by her parents Robert and Helen Thoburn and sister-in-law Sharon McCagherty.
Cathie leaves behind her loving husband of 47 years Ken, her sons Kevin (Malle) and Christopher (Robin), beloved grandchildren Brenden, Taydin and Rylyn, sisters Georgina (Fraser) Gavin and Carol (Leonard) Crivea, sister-in-law Diane Weaver, and many loving nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins and her very best friend Patricia (Timothy) Beauregard.
Cathie will be forever loved, fondly remembered and greatly missed by all who knew her. She was a loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, nanie, auntie and friend who loved her family and friends more than anything else.
Cathie’s family would like to thank Dr. Kevin Black and the staff at Texada Medical Clinic as well as the doctors and staff at Powell River General Hospital for their care and assistance.
A celebration of life will be held at The Royal Canadian Legion Texada Branch No. 232, Saturday, March 1 at 1 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Cathie’s memory to Texada Medical Clinic.
