Herbert Hindle, November 25, 1918 - January 9, 2014
Much loved by his family and many friends, Herb was born in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan and passed away peacefully at Olive Devaud Residence at the age of 95.
Herb loved flying. After earning his private pilot’s licence in 1938, he soon after joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and served as a flying instructor, fighter pilot and Commanding Officer during WWII. He married his first wife, Alma Evelyn Chute, on October 10, 1942 in Manitoba and moved to Powell River after the war in November 1945 to join his parents and raise a family. Soon after his arrival, in a ceremony here in Powell River, Herb was decorated with the Air Force Cross by Governor General Sir Harold Alexander, in whose honour the local Legion building and nearby street are named.
In 1949, Herb and Alma started the well-known Hindle’s Gift-Arts & Stationery on Marine Avenue, which is still operated today under the name Hindle’s Camera & Stationery by Herb’s son Doug and wife Anna.
In 1995, two years after the death of his first wife Alma, he married his second wife Joan Milligan and remained with her in a loving relationship until Joan’s death in 2008.
Herb was a charter member of the Powell River Lions Club. He loved gardening, woodworking, fishing, golfing, travelling and, most of all, the many, many close friends he made during his life here in Powell River.
A special thank you to the wonderful staff of Olive Devaud Residence and in particular to Winnifred (Winnie) Williams who provided love, friendship and caring almost every single day during Herb’s final years.
Herb is survived by his three children Terry (Rae), Doug (Anna) and Judy (Ken) as well as six grandchildren Bradley, Melissa, Jeffrey, Kelsey, Michael and Suzanne and five great-grandchildren Joshua, Meaghan, Caleigh, David and Ryan.
A memorial service will be held at 11 am, Saturday, February 1 at Powell River United Church with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to British Columbia Cancer Foundation or the Alzheimer Society of British Columbia.
Herb, from all your family: “We realize you.”
