Hugh Hurlburt, February 21, 1928 - January 22, 2014

Hugh took his last breath on earth and has gone away to join his wife of 57 years, Bettie. Hugh was the first child of James and Muriel Hurlburt and was later joined by brother Ross and sister Jean. He grew up in Ottawa, ON, moved to BC with the family in 1944 and graduated from McGee High School in Vancouver.

Hugh enjoyed sports, especially ice hockey and football and became a star running back for the Meralomas football club.

Like his father, he was a born salesman and his first job was selling coffee door to door for Blue Ribbon Tea and Coffee Company. He was a good skier and after meeting Bettie Cruickshank on Grouse Mountain, married her on April 29, 1954. Then along came Gordon, Grant and Greg “Boomer.”

The family lived in Richmond, BC before moving to Powell River in 1970. Hugh loved living in Powell River because he knew it was a great place to raise a family. He would fish in the ocean, take the family for beach fires at Okeover to pick oysters and clams or go boating to the cabin on Powell Lake.

After running his own aluminum awning and door business he changed careers and got into the insurance business as an agent for Mutual Life and later opened Breen and Hurlburt Insurance. When asked about their insurance policies clients would often answer, “I’m not sure what I have but it’s all looked after by Hughie.” He coached minor hockey, was a volunteer fireman and built a cabin on Powell Lake with the Melvin family.

He retired in 1986 and with Bettie made a winter home in Hemet, California, enjoying golf and travelling. He loved the heat and sunshine and if he was the colour of a chestnut, he was happy. He loved salt and put it on anything. He was always very social and loved to have people around him. He loved having happy hour at 5 pm and inviting anybody he could find to join him, even if you were supposed to be somewhere else. “Bonus Points” is what he would say. He was well known on the golf course, in the clubhouse, in the hockey rink, up the lake and the beach vendors in Puerto Vallarta all knew him by name.

He loved to shake it up on the dance floor and enjoy the party. He loved to bet football, hockey or even sports he had no idea about and was game for betting on anything, even the coin toss.

He kept up with all his extended nieces and nephews and was always interested in their lives. He was a loving husband, a great dad, a “cool” grandpa, a fun uncle and a good friend to many.

As his children, we were not surprised to hear he was chasing paper airplanes at a New Year’s Eve party.

Hugh enjoyed a long and wonderful life and we will miss him a lot. He was predeceased by Bettie in 2010 and grandson Cody in 2012.

Funeral service and reception will be held at 1 pm on Friday, January 31, at Westview Baptist Church, 3676 Joyce Avenue, with a get together following at 3 pm at the Carlson Community Club, 4463 Joyce Avenue.

Love ya, from Gordon (Maria), Grant, Boomer (Elissa), Mykel (Katie) and Kenedi Hurlburt.

Herbert Hindle, November 25, 1918 - January 9, 2014

Much loved by his family and many friends, Herb was born in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan and passed away peacefully at Olive Devaud Residence at the age of 95.

In 1995, two years after the death of his first wife Alma, he married his second wife Joan Milligan and remained with her in a loving relationship until Joan’s death in 2008.

Herb was a charter member of the Powell River Lions Club. He loved gardening, woodworking, fishing, golfing, travelling and, most of all, the many, many close friends he made during his life here in Powell River.
