Lucia Fransisca Zach (née Holthuysen, Niewold), October 21, 1939 – July 9, 2011

After a long sickness and with her family by her side, our wife, mom, and Oma passed away peacefully in her home. In her first life, Lucy came to Canada with her husband Gerhard Niewold and raised her two  children, Renee (Ted) Magnowski and Joyce (David) Percey in North Delta, BC. She and Gerry divorced amicably after 23 years and he remained a friend in her life.

She met the love of her life, Heinz, with whom she began her second life in Powell River. Kindred hearts, Lucy and Heinz carved out a life where nature came indoors, chickens were always in the background, fishing, camping and a fire at night was part of weekly life, where music filled each day, and children were always present. Their foster son of 26 years, Tyler Caissie is a testament to that! A born  caregiver with a zest for life, and who lived each day to the fullest, Lucy took care of all of us first and  welcomed everyone into her life. Her positive attitude and ability to be the eternal optimist spurred us on  through bumps in the road. Her greatest joy was her grandchildren, Shane Magnowski, Devin and Connor Percey. She was so proud of her grandchildren and loved them each for who they were.

Lucy is survived by a large family of caring sisters and brothers, nieces, nephews and extended family, some of whom have passed and others who remain. A favourite sister, auntie, and Oma she leaves a  legacy of a life well lived.

Graveside Service (family only) will be held at Holy Cross Cemetery at a later date. Celebration of Life (family and friends) will be held on Saturday, July 23 at 1 pm at Community Living Place.

Sylvie Marie Wheatley (née Pharand), September 1, 1962 - June 15, 2011

Sylvie was born in La Sarre, Abitibi QC. She moved with her family to BC in 1966 and graduated from Max Cameron Senior High in 1980.

Sylvie battled cancer from October 2006 with amazing grace, courage and determination, ever smiling. She leaves her husband Bob (of 10 joyful years), from her former marriage son Ryan McAllister (20), and  daughter Ashley McAllister (17), mother Reina and stepfather Garry Lewis, brother Dan Pharand, many  aunts and uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews in BC, Alberta and Quebec, and numerous friends. Sylvie was predeceased by her father JC Pharand in 2008.

Sylvie sang with the band “Royal Flush,” appearing at the Beach Gardens in the late 70s before moving to Vancouver BC, Oregon, and finally California. Sylvie built a medical transcription business, EMTI Inc,  which she ran successfully for 15 years. She enjoyed life, was an Advanced SCUBA Diver, rode a  Kawasaki 750 cc sports motorcycle, drove a red Corvette Targa Top and was an accomplished artist – one of her works was the webmaster’s choice to advertise a California Fine Arts Exhibition in Sacramento CA  where the painting was featured.

A Celebration of Sylvie’s Life will be held on Saturday, July 30 at 1 pm to 4 pm at the Beach Gardens  Resort, Powell River, in the Pot Latch Room. Please RSVP to Bev Murray: [email protected], Bob  Wheatley: [email protected], or Debbie Thistlethwaite: [email protected].
