James Alton (Jim) Cochrane 90, of Parksville BC, passed away peacefully Thursday, July 18, 2013 while eating his breakfast granola at Stanford Place in Parksville.

Jim was born March 17, 1923 in New Westminster BC to Percy and Olive (Findlay) Cochrane. He graduated from Burnaby South High School in 1941 and from the University of British Columbia in 1947 with a Master’s Degree in Chemical Engineering. Jim spent his working career in the pulp and paper industry, in Ocean Falls, Powell River and Port Alberni, where he made many life-long friends. He moved to District 69 in 1976 where he enjoyed golf, gardening, reading, travelling, red wine and life in general. Jim served on the board of the Society of Organized Services and served Knox United Church on the Finance Committee. He was president of the Eaglecrest Garden Club and, in his personal gardening life, maintained the church cemetery for many years.

Jim was predeceased by sister Ruth (Mann) in 1968 and wife Phyllis (Campbell) in 1981. Jim was twice lucky in love and, in 1985, married Margaret Brandon. He is survived by Margaret, sister Edith Chamberlayne (Gordon), children David (Betty Seinen), Mike (Holly), Anne (Mel Hunt) and stepchildren Pat, John and Sarah. He leaves grandchildren Jesse, Emma, Keith (Dave and Betty), Aysha, Lynden, Alex (Mike and Holly), Vivian (Anne and Mel), Kitty (Pat), Will and Katherine (John), great-grandchildren Georgia (Aysha and Patrick) and Miles (Vivian and Brendan).

The family would like to thank the staff of Stanford Place for the care Jim received in the last two and a half years of his life.

A celebration of life service will be held at 2:00 pm, Sunday July 28 2013 at Knox United Church 345 Pym Road Parksville BC with Reverend Foster Freed officiating. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Society of Organized Services, Parksville BC.


Thomas (Tom) Charles Styles, May 21, 1939 - July 17, 2013

After a short struggle with cancer, Tom passed peacefully at home after heartfelt goodbyes with his family. He was predeceased by his first wife Arlene, brother Ken and sister Pat. Left to mourn are his wife Charlotte, children Michelle Mercer (Glen), Terese Styles, Cameron (Carla) Styles, stepchildren Glenn (Alice) McCallum, Dale (Wayne) Janusson and Leslie (Scott) Ross, 13 grandchildren, one great- grandchild as well as his brother David (Li) Styles and sister Susan (Darnell) Hankey.

Tom was born in Ocean Falls, BC, was raised in Vancouver and moved to Powell River in 1966 with his family. He was a man who loved people, volunteered on many fronts and gave generously of his time and himself. Over the years he was active in the Lions club, Scouts, Malaspina Volunteer Fire Department, Powell River Therapeutic Riding Association, Salvation Army Wednesday Lunch program, Christmas kettle and his churches. He always had great compassion for those in need, loved to party and cherished his family. He will be missed by many.

A celebration of life will be held Saturday, July 27 at 1 pm at Westview Baptist Church with reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Powell River Therapeutic Riding Association.
