M. Helen McKenzie, May 11, 1923 - May 22, 2013
Having reached the grand milestone of 90 years, Helen passed peacefully, surrounded by the love of her family. She was predeceased by her daughters Patricia and Willa, son-in-law Dick Button and grandson Thomas DeJong.
She is survived by her loving husband of 74 years Bill, children Chris (Dick), Mike (Toni), Kelly (Hans), Brent (Valerie), (Sylvie), and grandchildren Megan, D’Arcy, Chad, Michael, Diane, Karen, Liam, Ryan, Kyra, Jennifer, Leiah, Kyla, Erin, 10 great-grandchildren and one on the way.
Helen came from Saskatchewan to Powell River with Bill in 1940. During the war she enjoyed working in the mill, sawing the immense spruce logs from the coastal forests. She had a keen interest in education, politics, sports, animals and the environment. Her life focus, however, was her family and she worked passionately to guide them all to reach their best potential.
From her early childhood to her last days, Helen met life with grit, perseverance, independence and determination. She will be greatly missed but will now be reunited with those who went before.
No service by her request. A family celebration of her life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Alzheimer Society of BC, in memoriam, would be gratefully appreciated.
Marion Paul Robertson (née Kenmuir), April 13, 1934 - May 28, 2013
It is with sad and heavy hearts that the family of Marion Robertson announces her passing. She was born in Vancouver BC and as an infant moved to Nanaimo. Shortly thereafter she moved to Powell River where she grew up. As a youth, Marion joined the Air Cadets and became one of the first of three women through cadets in BC to receive her pilot licence. Mom loved to fly and spent many hours in the air flying to Nanaimo, Vancouver and to other destinations. Through cadets she became a sharp shooter and enjoyed night-shooting targets across Cranberry Lake.
Mom loved to rollerskate and that is where she met the love of her life W. Merton Robertson. They were happily married for 49 years before his passing.
Mom became a bookkeeper and worked at various jobs, working at the Powell River mill offices, Powell River General Hospital, and as a teller at a couple of banks.
She was predeceased by her mom Marion, father John Kenmuir, her husband W. Merton Robertson, and brothers Jack and Bill Kenmuir. She is survived by her son Ron, daughters Laurie and Julia (Joe) Huczel, grandson Kyle and her four-legged grandson Shylow.
Special thank you to Dr. Vidushi Mittra-Melrose, Dr. Dohm, Linda, Nova and the other nurses who cared for our mother on the fourth floor at the hospital. Words cannot describe our gratitude for the care and compassion we all received. Thank you to home support workers who took really good care of mom as well.
Service will be held at Stubberfield Funeral Home on Friday, June 7 at 1 pm. Graveside burial and tea to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations to The Center for Epilepsy and Seizure Education would be greatly appreciated.
