Thora Evelyn Bartfai (née Wilshire), October 30, 1925 – February 25, 2013
It is with deep sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our dear wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Thora.
Thora leaves behind her husband of 66 years Andy, sons Danny (Betty), Len (Renza), Jim (Maria), Ed (Cathy), Steve (Kim), grandchildren Robin (Jason), Darren (Heather), Brian, Tanya, Ted (Genevieve), Kimberly, Kellie (Ken), Stacey, Jamie, Sarah, Drew (Stephanie) and Tyler, great-grandchildren Cayden, Cooper, Cohen, Adele, Rowen, Haylie and Sage. She was predeceased by her brother Maurice Wilshire, and sisters Phyllis Tait, Eunice Newbury and Hazel Youden.
Thora was born and raised in Powell River. After leaving high school she went into the army for nearly three years. When she returned, she married Andy on February 2, 1947. They built a house on Park Avenue and raised their five rambunctious boys with many other “Park Ave” families. In 1986, Thora and Andy moved to a home on the water south of town. While many people with grown families were downsizing, Thora insisted on a home big enough to hold her entire growing family for family dinners and gatherings. Family was everything to Thora.
We would like to thank the nurses at Evergreen Extended Care Unit for their love and care for Thora in the past two years, as well as Dr. Morwood, Father Dass and the many friends who brightened her days.
Prayers will be held Friday, March 1 at 6 pm at Church of the Assumption. A Mass of Christian burial will be held Saturday, March 2 at 1:30 pm, also at the church. A celebration of life will follow.
In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Evergreen Activity Department for the Eden Committee or the Powell River SPCA.
Thora’s faith, determination and amazing ability to love and accept each and every person who came into her life has been the ultimate example of how we all should lead our lives. We are truly blessed to have had her showing us the way.
Sigrid Hawkes, October 14, 1947 - February 17, 2013
Sigrid’s heart was as big as the whole world and encompassed everyone. To the last hours of her life she delighted in all things: people, animals, art, the sea, the moon, the wind, the sun, the trees. Please remember her in moments among these places in the world. Her last words were "I'm so happy."
As of March 10, 2013, there will be an account at the Scotiabank in Powell River for donations to feed the many, many cats she rescued and left behind. If anyone would rather donate to a registered charity please give to the SPCA in Powell River.
There will be a big party in her honour held on Saturday, May 25 from 3 pm until moonshine at the cabin on the beach at the end of Stustus Road near Palm Beach.

“If roses grow in heaven
Lord please pick a bunch for me
Place them in my mother’s arms
And tell her they are from me.
Tell her I love her and miss her
And when she turns to smile
Place a kiss upon her cheek
And hold her for awhile.”
Philip Bert Murphy, April 18, 1966 - January 31, 2013
Please join Phil’s family and friends in celebrating his life on Saturday, March 2 at 1:30 pm at the Patricia Theatre.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the Murphy Girls College Fund that has been set up at First Credit Union for his daughters.
